Tank or Tankless Water Heaters

If you are in the market for a new water heater, you’ve probably been recommended a “tankless” option. While there are certainly clear benefits to a tankless water heater, modern storage or, “tank” water heaters are still viable for a lot of homes.

Tank Water Heaters

The classic image of a water heater – the large, closeted metal cylinder tucked away somewhere we never look – is what we refer to as a “storage” water heater. These heaters, as you might expect, “store” hot water to be used when and where we need it. They’re dependable, they’re relatively affordable and because they’re so ubiquitous, experienced plumbers know how to work on them. There are some downsides, however. Because of the effects of continuously heating water, storage water heaters may use around 25% more energy than tankless water heaters on average. Surprisingly, they also tend to not to last as long as many tankless options.

Tankless Water Heaters

Water Heater InstallationTankless water heaters, on the other hand, are small units that provide the option for a continuous supply of hot water on demand. Though they may cost more upfront, their initial costs may be offset by energy and efficiency savings down the line. They also don’t take up as much space.

The main consideration with a tankless option is that output may be limited. That means if your water use is such that there is often showering, dish washing, and laundry all going on at once – a single tankless option might fail to keep up with the demand. For most homes, however, either option is completely viable. What the decision comes down to is specific water needs.
